RE Engine Games, 2017 to Today: What Each One Proved

Every game Capcom has itself tied to RE Engine, from Resident Evil 7 through the remakes and Monster Hunter Wilds, with the year it shipped and what it proved.

Short answer

The main RE Engine games are Resident Evil 7 (2017), the Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 remakes, Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil Village, Monster Hunter Rise, Street Fighter 6, Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds. Capcom publishes no official list and no engine version numbers, so this one covers the titles Capcom has itself tied to the engine, with the year each shipped and what it proved.

Key points

  • Resident Evil 7: biohazard was the first publicly shipped RE Engine game, in 2017.
  • It moved from horror to character action with Devil May Cry 5, then onto a handheld-first release with Monster Hunter Rise.
  • Monster Hunter Wilds is the clearest public evidence that the engine handles open, weather-driven environments.
  • Every row is a game Capcom has itself described as running on RE Engine; nothing is inferred from how a game looks.
  • Nothing in this list shows the REX Project tooling announced on 2 October 2026 running in a released game.

RE Engine games by first public release. Years are first release, not announcement; platforms are launch platforms only. Capcom publishes no official list and no engine release notes, so every row is a title Capcom has itself tied to the engine and “what it proved” is our reading rather than a Capcom claim.

If you want the engine rather than its games, what RE Engine is covers the name, the first shipped title and where the technology stops.

2017 to 2019: the proving years

Resident Evil 7: biohazard arrived in 2017 as the engine’s first public release. Capcom used it for a first-person horror game with a photogrammetry-led art pipeline, a departure for a series that had been third-person. Much of what the engine is known for starts there.

The 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 showed the other half of the story: production reuse. Capcom rebuilt a fixed-camera 1998 game as a third-person title on the technology it had used two years earlier. That precedent is why a Resident Evil 1 remake is asked about so often. It has not been announced, and we treat the question as analysis rather than news.

Devil May Cry 5 landed the same year and pushed the engine in a different direction. A character-action game lives or dies on input response and animation detail, not on a still room lit to look photographed. Capcom shipped both kinds of game within two years.

2020 to 2022: scale and portability

The Resident Evil 3 remake followed in 2020, a year after the second game’s remake. We read that cadence as evidence that remake production had become repeatable; Capcom has not described how much engine or asset work carried across, so treat the reading as inference.

Resident Evil Village in 2021 tested a different axis. The same game shipped on PS4 and Xbox One alongside PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so the engine had to hold two performance envelopes at once.

Monster Hunter Rise is the counter-example to the idea that the engine only does photorealism. It shipped first on Nintendo Switch in 2021 and reached Windows in 2022, and the engine’s reputation for holding up on modest hardware is clearest there.

2023 onwards: open worlds and a new IP

Street Fighter 6 and the Resident Evil 4 remake both arrived in 2023. The fighting game is the interesting one for engine-watchers: its World Tour mode renders explorable city streets rather than two fighters on a stage.

Dragon’s Dogma 2, in 2024, was the first entry in that series built on RE Engine, and it is an open-world action RPG rather than a set of connected rooms. Monster Hunter Wilds followed in 2025 with open environments and changing weather. We look at what that scale required of the engine on its own page.

Pragmata sits outside the pattern: a new IP rather than a sequel, and the first clean test of the engine on a property with no established look to match. Its public timing has moved more than once, so no release year is asserted here. What is documented about its technology has its own page.

On 2 October 2026, at the Capcom Open Conference RE:2026, Capcom said it will evolve RE Engine into an “AI generation engine” as part of the REX Project. That changes no row above: no shipping title has been shown using the new tooling and Capcom has not named one. Our explainer of the RE:2026 announcement sorts the claim from the coverage.

Is this every RE Engine game?

No. Capcom has never published a complete list, and some titles have never been publicly tied to the engine. This page covers the releases Capcom has associated with RE Engine in its own materials.

Which RE Engine game came first?

Resident Evil 7: biohazard, released in 2017. It was the first game to ship publicly on the engine, and the starting point for this whole list.

Does Monster Hunter Wilds use RE Engine?

Yes. Capcom has presented Wilds as an RE Engine title, and it is the clearest public example of the engine handling open environments rather than corridor-scale levels.

Do any of these games use the AI tooling Capcom announced?

No public evidence exists for that. Capcom said on 2 October 2026 that RE Engine will evolve into an “AI generation engine” as part of the REX Project, but no shipping title has been shown using it.

Why is there no engine version column?

Because Capcom has never published an official RE Engine version list, so any numbers in that column would be invented.
